Skills Badges & Digital Credentials

Art Futures recognises creative and professional development through the award of digital skills badges. These badges act as micro-credentials, evidencing progression within key areas of studio practice and professional learning.

Each badge represents demonstrated skills, reflective engagement, and sustained participation in learning activities across the course.

Skill Areas

Badges are awarded across a range of disciplines, which may include:

Studio practice and technical development

Research and contextual understanding

Experimentation and creative risk-taking

Collaboration and communication

Professional practice and presentation

Skill Levels

Within each discipline, badges are awarded at progressive levels, for example:

Foundation Level - developing foundational understanding and skills

Developing Practice - applying skills with increasing confidence and consistency

Advanced Practice- demonstrating independence, depth, and critical awareness

This structure allows students to clearly see how their skills evolve over time.

Assessment and Award

All skills badges are:

Assessed by the Art Department team

Agreed and moderated prior to award

Linked to clearly defined criteria aligned to curriculum outcomes

Badges are not automatic and are awarded only when evidence of skill development has been demonstrated.

Developing Practice in Textiles – Micro-Credential

EXAMPLE

This micro-credential recognises students’ developing practice in textiles through material exploration, experimentation, and purposeful making, in line with BTEC National Art and Design expectations. Students demonstrate their ability to select and manipulate textile materials and processes, record development through visual and written evidence, and refine ideas in response to research, testing, and feedback. The focus is on process, problem-solving, and creative decision-making, supporting progression towards resolved outcomes and professional working practices.

Digital Backpacks

Each student has a personal Art Futures backpack, which stores their awarded skills badges. This provides:

A visual overview of skills developed to date

A structured record of progression

A reflective tool to support learning conversations and portfolio development
